Italia '90 saw England reach the semi-finals for the first time on foreign soil under the stewardship of Sir Bobby Robson before they went out in a heart-breaking penalty shoot-out against Germany after Pearce and Waddle failed to convert their spot kicks. However the 1990 World Cup will always be fondly remembered for David Platt's volleyed winner against Belgium in the last minute of extra time, Gary Lineker's two penalties against Cameroon, Gazza's tears and as a watershed in English football when people fell back in love with the beautiful game again.
